The paper exposes a brief history of social network services on the Web that have evolved under the concept of Web 2.0, along with the most significant examples of these platforms. The concept of social networking and the main tests used to study them are explained, as well as their implications within different kinds of social capital (weak and strong ties) and the impact that the different web services can have on the relationship among their users.
